Toilet should be a constitutional right for every woman: Jairam Ramesh

Budaun, 25 June, 2012: Union Rural Development Minister Shri Jairam Ramesh recently said that toilets for every home in India is more important than success launch of missiles. He also stated that "It was a huge responsibility of the government and he himself spends most of his time talking and thinking about toilets."

The minister said, "Toilet should be a constitutional right" for every woman while slamming the common Indian mindset that open defecation is "a birthright".

"Toilet is a fundamental right for every woman....for her privacy, her dignity...every school must have a toilet, every Anganwadi must have a toilet, every home must have a toilet.
Mr Narvijay Yadav, founder president, Prakash Foundation, appreciated the minister for his noble thoughts and concern for the rural toilets. He also praised Prof Bindeshwari Pathak, the man behind the Sulabh International project.

Mr Yadav also disseminated a press release in this regard and demanded toilets for every home in all the 7 lakh villages in India. He informed that in his own native village, Palai, there was not a single toilet in any household.
