Crops worth 20 Crore lost to Singthara Jheel Floods

Budaun, 9 September 2011: Year after year, the Singthara lake situated in Bisauli tehsil of Budaun district in Western UP has been rendering havoc due to its annual flooding. The lake which is originally spread across 170 acres has the history of flooding more than 800 acres of cultivable land every year during the monsoons, owing to poor drainage of this water body.

Speaking about this issue, Raju, a local agriculturist from Palai village explains, “If we calculate the average losses suffered due to such flooding of SingtharaJheel, crops worth over Rs 20 crore have been lost since independence. The major sufferers are the small time farmers who sow paddy on their lands in surrounding area which gets submerged as soon as the rainy season sets up.”

Explaining the haplessness of the regional peasants, Dinesh, another farmer of Palai said, “Although the total loss this year is estimated to Rs 10 lakh due to less rains, but there has never been any permanent solution to this problem. Averagely the lake has been causing damage to crops worth Rs 30-40 lakhs annually. Besides this, other losses to the infrastructure and opportunities are beyond evaluation.”

National level organisation for up-liftment of Indian farmers and rural community, Prakash Foundation while taking initiative on this annual calamity has submitted a memorandum to Mr A. V. Rajmauli, District Magistrate, Budaun in this regards. Through this memorandum the foundation has sought administrative action towards a permanent solution of the problem.
